The Michigan Wine Collaborative (MWC) is non-profit organization with the following mission…

To enhance the sustainability and profitability of the Michigan wine industry by supporting wineries, growers and other businesses and individuals connected to the industry – today and for future generations.

In 2016 when the Michigan wine industry’s state organization, the Michigan Grape and Wine Industry Council, began transitioning to the Michigan Craft Beverage Council, the wine industry created the Michigan Wine Collaborative (MWC). MWC was created to supplement losses the industry would experience in the Council’s absence.

MWC is made up of a wide variety of wine professionals and enthusiasts from all sectors of the wine industry. Our members include wineries, growers, suppliers & vendors, researchers & educators, government officials, retailers, hospitality, media, and MORE! We are big into the idea that MI wine is for everyone and there is room for everyone. Let’s grow the industry, together.

Winemaker, Modales Winery

Contact: a.backlin@modaleswines.com

Andrew Backlin, a native Northern Californian, has been surrounded by winegrowing and winemaking for much of his life. During high school, his first job was working on a bottling line after school. Andrew always had an interest in foraging for wild plants and fermentation. It started with kombucha brewing, which then led to homebrewing, and eventually, he fell in love with winemaking.

In California, Andrew began his winemaking career as an enologist at Steele Wines in Lake County, CA. While working there, he enrolled in courses at Santa Rosa Junior College and the UC Davis extension for Enology. Under the mentorship of Jed Steele, an innovator in low-intervention winemaking, he worked my way up to the position of Assistant Winemaker at Steele Wines.

Andrew began his Michigan wine career at Lawton Ridge Winery as assistant winemaker (where he fell in love with cool climate winemaking) before briefly returning to California to work for Duckhorn wines. In 2018, he and his family returned to Michigan to become the winemaker at Modales in Fennville where he focuses  90% of winemaking processes to Native Fermentations and adopting a hands-off approach. Modales is now transitioning their vineyards to organic viticulture.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_single_image image=”3841″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]

SE Winery – Bob Utter

Owner, Flying Otter Winery

Bob grew up in western Nebraska and graduated from the University of Nebraska with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. Bob had a 35+ year career in Design Engineering, Engineering Management, and Engineering Consulting that took him to Wisconsin, Texas, Michigan, and, as it turned out, too much time in France, where he fell in love with French wine and cheese. SE Grower- Bob Sorenson

Owner, Pleasant Valley Vineyards

Bob’s passion for wines began like many others – a love for the diverse choices, flavors, and pairings that they offer. What started as a challenge from a relative has evolved into a family venture that includes owning a vineyard, processing various wines, and establishing a tasting room. This journey has been both rewarding and challenging, with the Sorensen family embracing the yearly hurdles posed by Mother Nature, along with the ongoing learning and hard work that accompany this endeavor. Bob found great joy in the supportive and collaborative community of grape growers and winemakers, which has enriched his experience.

Until recently, Bob was a partner at Eastbrook Homes, a residential development and building company serving the West and Central Michigan regions, from Lansing to Holland and Grand Rapids to Muskegon and Whitehall. They focused on both suburban and urban projects, contributing to the growth of our cities.

Dedicated to education, Bob has been an advocate of the charter school movement in Michigan, serving as President of the Board at Eagle Crest Charter School for several years. Currently, Bob is a proud member of the Board and Executive Committee for Grace Adventures, a nonprofit family Christian organization based in Mears, Michigan.
